Plastic microsurgery for receding gums

Why are my gums receding?

Your gums may have receded for a variety of reasons, including aggressive tooth brushing, periodontal disease, braces or hereditary factors. You may not be in control of what caused the recession, but in the vast majority of cases gum tissue can be augmented or replaced by a variety of means, including corrective gum repositioning or soft tissue grafts. The technique is chosen depending on the severity of the problem and the thickness of the nearby gums.

What is the treatment like?

Gum repositioning and soft tissue grafts can be used to stop or slow down gum recession, and/or to improve the aesthetics of your smile. Soft tissue grafts are usually taken from the roof of the mouth and transferred to the tooth with gum recession to cover exposed root surfaces. In some cases, it may be possible to use a re-absorbable 3D collagen matrix, which would eliminate the need for a second surgical site.

The use of microsurgical techniques (magnifying loupes and microblades) has greatly enhanced the predictability and success rate whilst also minimising post-operative discomfort.

A thorough examination of the area and discussion with the patient regarding their expectations and needs are of utmost importance for this cosmetic procedure.

Aesthetic Crown Lengthening (Treatment of "gummy smile")

Although your teeth appear short, they may actually be the proper length but covered with too much gum tissue. We can correct this by performing a periodontal plastic surgery procedure called aesthetic crown lengthening.

During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are microsurgically reshaped with symmetry to expose more of the natural tooth.

Small gum contouring can have amazing effect on your smile. A gummy smile usually gives the appearance of short teeth and recontouring the gums with symmetry can greatly enhance your looks.

This can be done to one tooth to even your gum line, or to several teeth to expose a natural, beautiful broad smile.
